What's more, 6% of this age group who aren't retired don't think they will ever retire - equating to over three-quarters of a million people. Standard Life says this research suggests the UK could be heading towards a "perfect retirement storm".
Although 64% of 45 to 65-year-olds who have financial plans in place feel confident that their plans will support their future after retirement, 21% of these adults no longer feel confident and a further 10% have never felt confident.
What's worse, more than a third of 45 to 65-year-olds have no financial plans in place at all for their long-term future. Yet despite this, 72% of this age group reckon they will retire between 61 and 70 years old.
"The current financial crisis has brought into sharp focus the need to make and review appropriate plans," says John Lawson, head of pensions policy at Standard Life.
"This will clearly be challenging but there are many things you can do to make your retirement years as secure as possible."
Planning for your retirement is extremely important if you want to live comfortably when you're no longer working. One of the best ways to save for retirement is by contributing to a pension as early as possible - the earlier you start, the more interest you'll earn and the larger your pension pot will be.
If you need advice on how to plan for your retirement, it may be worth talking to an independent financial adviser.
